Sinneave Research Lead (Term)


TERM Assignment:

This is a non-union ministry grant funded term position for the Sinneave Project. If a continuing employee is the successful candidate, this assignment will be considered a Term Assignment, and the successful candidate must request and obtain a leave of absence from their current and substantive position, where applicable.

Accessibility Institute is a key unit for accessibility leadership at Carleton University and is aligned with the university’s vision and the Strategic Integrated Plan.

Accessibility Institute operates as an internal unit of Carleton University, subject to all the university’s relevant policies, procedures and requirements. The activities of the Institute are supported by the Office of the Vice-Presidents Students & Engagement, Research & International, and the Provost and VP Academic.

Accessibility Institute emerged out of the READ Initiative (Research, Education, Accessibility, and Design), established in 2012 as a proof-of-concept initiative for interdisciplinary and action-oriented work to advance accessibility in Canada

The Sinneave Project
Autistic Canadians experience multiple barriers to securing suitable and stable housing. Under Sinneave’s leadership, the Accessibility Institute will build a National Autism Housing Network, with the Accessibility Institute constituting the Housing Knowledge Synthesis and Mobilization Hub within this network. The network will bring together the good community-based work that is being accomplished in different locations and at different points throughout the housing ecosystem. We will engage in research on best practices in accessible housing with a focus on neurodiversity, encouraging a shared language and understanding of accessible housing through an autism lens. Through a range of knowledge dissemination, transfer, and exchange, we hope to stimulate a paradigm shift in the way that housing for autistic adults is conceived, informing public policy and influencing change at all levels of government. Sinneave and the Accessibility Institute will collaborate to build a National Autism Housing Network, synthesize best practices in accessible housing, and stimulate a paradigm shift in housing for autistic adults.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Project Manager, the Research Lead is responsible for leading all research activities for the three-year Sinneave project as outlined and agreed to in the Service Agreement.


The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Knowledge of research and sector trends, project management, and business development
• Knowledge of office as well as the broader university academic units, departments, and divisions
• Working knowledge of office productivity software/databases, discipline-specific software, enterprise software such as banner, and internet competency
• Knowledge of cultural competency and diversity in a business context
• Knowledge in English and French languages with both excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated experience working independently with little direct supervision to deliver required project elements from beginning to end.
• Experience conducting business and engaging with variety of stakeholders within corporate and community service environments, including the ability to navigate conflict in a constructive way.

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Completion of undergraduate degree in any field. Master’s degree will be preferred.
• Minimum of five years of related experience in leading research projects, with expertise in accessibility/disability, employment or related fields.

HR Note:

The Sinneave Research Lead is a full-time term non-union position due to the project funding granted by the Ministry. The starting salary will be $66,362 and the total compensation package includes competitive extended health and dental benefits, generous annual and sick leave.

Important Note Regarding Pandemic Related Operations:

This position is required to work on campus. Exceptionally, since March 2020, many staff and faculty at Carleton University have been working from home in order to comply with public health requirements while continuing to provide services to support the operational functioning of the university. We are currently in the process of identifying positions that need to work on campus as part of our return to campus process. This position may be required to work temporarily remotely due to public health requirements or it may have been identified as one of the roles that are required to work on campus. If this position is required to work on campus, the successful candidate will be informed of the health and safety measures that are in place to ensure their safety on campus. If there is a requirement to work remotely (it is possible that there could be a requirement to work both remotely and on campus), the successful candidate will work with the manager to set up a remote work environment including discussing appropriate technology and requirements. Please note that once public health requirements permit, Carleton University will resume normal on campus operations and at that point there will be a timely notification provided by the manager and the requirement to working full time physically onsite will resume. Therefore, we are looking for candidates currently in or looking to relocate to the Ottawa area.

Additionally, Carleton University is continuing to maintain a safe work environment and requires mandatory vaccination against COVID-19 as per Public Health recommendations under the Reopening Ontario Act. As Carleton University requires that staff be available to attend on-campus meetings and to work, as required, in person, the successful candidate will be required to comply with this policy and be fully vaccinated before commencing employment.
