Personal Support Worker (Grant-Funded Opportunity)

The Attendant Service Program, located at both Carleton University and Algonquin College, is looking for client focused and reliable Certified Personal Support Workers (PSW) for full-time contract positions. Please note that this Program is Grant-Funded and therefore the successful candidates will be employees of the Grant. These current contracts will be for 18 months, with the option to extend, based on funding and performance. Please note that the work is scheduled in 9 hour shifts, including evening (4pm-1am), overnight (11pm-8am) and weekend shifts. Our greatest need is currently for overnight shifts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Personal Support Worker provides assistance based on individual service plans, in a team-based environment, to students with disabilities in the Attendant Services Program. The service is client directed in nature and available on a 24-hour basis to enable students with physical disabilities to live on campus and pursue post-secondary education while receiving service that maintains their autonomy and dignity. The primary responsibility of the Personal Support Worker is the safety of the clients.

Main Accountabilities
Providing attendant care duties under the direction of the client may include, but not be limited to, the broad categories of services available as follows:

1. Documenting of services provided and following of reporting procedures.
2. Personal hygiene, which may include:
• Dressing, undressing
• Washing, bathing, showering, bed bath
• Oral care
• Hair care
• Preventive skin care, including changing of non-sterile dressings
• Personal Grooming (including make-up, shaving)
• Assistance with medication (premeasured in a blister pack from a pharmacy only)
• Menstrual care
• Bowel and bladder care, including emptying and changing of leg and night bags, application and maintenance of external condom.
• Transferring and re-positioning
• Operation of transfer devices, and evacuation chairs (Lifts and turners)
• Assistance with range of motion exercises*
• Limited assistance with some respiratory devices (CPAP/BIPAP machines, AMBU bags)* • • • Ostomy* and Stoma care*
* Must be trained by the Nursing Supervisor of Health and Counselling Services
3. Other assistance, which may include:
• Laundry and housekeeping, such as making beds, cleaning dishes, etc.
• Meal preparation and feeding
• Assistance with Registered Service Animals
• Other various task according to the needs of the individual clients


The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
Knowledge of:
• Resident hygiene, optimal functioning, well-being, feeding, elimination
• Transfer and positioning techniques
• Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation

Competencies, Skills and Abilities required:
• Ability to follow client care plan and carry out activities as directed
• Ability to follow safety procedures to maintain a safe and clean environment
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the job
• Must demonstrate respect for client choice, privacy and confidentiality
• Must have good interpersonal and communications skills to work respectfully with clients, families, colleagues and staff
• Must have good organizational and time management skills to be able to prioritize and manage time effectively
• Must be self-motivated with the ability to work independently
• Must be reliable, punctual, flexible, adaptable, tactful

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Personal Support Worker Certificate.
• Valid Standard First Aid and CPR.

Important Note Regarding Pandemic Related Operations:

This position is required to work on campus. Exceptionally, since March 2020, many staff and faculty at Carleton University have been working from home in order to comply with public health requirements while continuing to provide services to support the operational functioning of the university. We are currently in the process of identifying positions that need to work on campus as part of our return to campus process. This position may be required to work temporarily remotely due to public health requirements or it may have been identified as one of the roles that are required to work on campus. If this position is required to work on campus, the successful candidate will be informed of the health and safety measures that are in place to ensure their safety on campus. If there is a requirement to work remotely (it is possible that there could be a requirement to work both remotely and on campus), the successful candidate will work with the manager to set up a remote work environment including discussing appropriate technology and requirements. Please note that once public health requirements permit, Carleton University will resume normal on campus operations and at that point there will be a timely notification provided by the manager and the requirement to working full time physically onsite will resume. Therefore, we are looking for candidates currently in or looking to relocate to the Ottawa area.
